Sociology tries to solve the mystery and suspense of relationshipsamong people. İstanbul Şehir University Sociology Department aims to train students who take interdisciplinarity as a method of learning and thinking, to internalize universal and scientific ethical norms with a critical and humanistic perspective, and to combine their subjective opinions with a mind open to different points of view, beliefs and ideas. They will also be able to look at events and problems in Turkey and around the world from a broad perspective and with a critical outlook. To this end, the department offers a sound training in social theory and methods along with high-quality instruction in all major sub-fields of the discipline – including everyday life, urban life, citizenship, politics, social movements and identities, religion, historical and economic developments, and modernization.
Our aim is to provide our students with an outlook that helps them understand social phenomena with due attention to their multiple facets as well as an ability to penetrate “beyond the visible”. The Sociology Program thus promises to equip its students with skills that facilitate thinking about societies analytically and systematically and provides its students as well with opportunities to gain practical experience in the implementation of these skills. These opportunities include various internships in different lines of specialization, Erasmus and other international programs, and other activities.
