İstanbul Şehir University Department of English Language and Literature takes a student oriented approach, aiming to provide students with critical skills to read, analyse, interpret, discuss and critically evaluate products of literary and non-literary culture in English. We offer courses on wide-ranging subjects from Gothic literature, modernism and drama to postcolonial literature, postmodernism, adaptation and contemporary women’s poetry, aiming to provide students with a working knowledge on traditional as well as latest research in the field. We promote an interdisciplinary approach to literature: our students are able to study literature in relation to various subjects of humanities such as political science, psychology, film studies and sociology. This way, we enable them to specialize in fields in relation to their specific interests. We encourage them to consider texts in relation to historical and hence cultural contexts. By offering various courses on literary theory, we provide our students with tools to critically engage with cultural products.
